The Popula Book Prize will be awarded to the book (or books) which, in the judges' estimation, best deserves reappraisal from a modern audience. This fun literary exercise is in keeping with Popula's mission to help save beautiful and worthy things from extinction, and preserve them for posterity.

The Editors are seeking judges and additional submissions now. The panel of judges will take four to six months to read the ten books that make the final cut. Thus, we anticipate announcing a winner sometime around the Spring of 2003.

If you'd like to apply to become a judge, or if you have a book you'd like to nominate, please write to The Editors. Judges will not be required to read all the books on the list, but each judge undertakes to participate on the panel mailing list, to read ten books, and to vote on at least one.

If it is possible to contact the author(s) of the winning book(s) or their agents or estates, Popula will be donating a small sum in the name of the book's author to the charity of his or her choice. If neither the author(s) nor his or her representatives can be contacted, Popula will make a donation to the Braille Institute in the author's name(s).

Each year, the editors and judges will choose a different year to review. In connection with the Prize, we are featuring a series of brief articles which will appear sporadically on Vintage Voice; the first appears here.
