VER BATIM...SUSAN SONTAG'S FAVORITE 20TH CENTURY BOOKS...DISCOVERED IN
TRANSLATION...a rather numbing rubric as if they'd been kicked, passed and
punted in the head...Decide to look up all the titles of PESSOA/ BERHNARD/ TRYSPKIN/
KERTESZ/ KIS/ BITOV/ SARAMAGO/ SEBALD/ NADAS/on MXB....most o.p..few copies
of each... to that large epistimological question whether the 'real world
exists' once again only LAME DUCK seems to be sure....talking about being
kicked in the head how about last weeks FULL PAGE AD from Alibris (10 grand
plus)...advertising for all those football widows Jerry Kramer's
underground classic FOOTBALL DIARY as x-mas supplication.....which they
didn;t have 1 that's spelled 0 copies listed...maybe if they kinds of knew
what they were doing they wouldn;t have to wire tap....Which brings us back to SS and her DISCOVER IN TRANS..which doesn't
include Proust/Kafka/Brecht/Tanazaki/Breton/Babel...x,y,z, or pretty much
anybody else (tho Pessoa/bernhard/saramagoa are houselhold names in some
households) so i guess the best way to read this list is SUSAN SONTAG'S
FAVORITE 20TH CENTURY BOOKS DISCOVERED IN TRANSLATION..that SUSAN SSONTAG'S
READ AND you small you haven't...as the king of the hill of snobbery i have
nothing against this except why beat around the bush when you can just
light it up...I first saw the 'divine' Susan at an ant-war rally at U.B. late
60's..gorgeous thin sneakered long-haired angelic voiced new york review of
books sentences that you whispered wished would never end ...then again 25
years later larger than life grey-haired spilling a Coke on my stand of
Books.."I;ll clean that up Ms.Sontag"...We get to talking and she buys some
come upstairs more talk of life of the mind and the 'golden age of
U.B....Olson/Creeley/Barth..." she comes back again for some more
schmoozing...she's teaching Hegel??Kant??..."For someone so famous it's a
wonder that i don't have any money"....Take to reading her new work..and it's all mulch..photography mulch
piled on philo mulch side by side lit mulch....next time she comes by I sit
on my car and ignore her..."Ms. Sontag..OOO how are you"..bad career move
in a career noted for them....i see her twice a year moving quickly always
dressed in dark colors..outside the window of a Japanese Rest..at a
movie..at twilight in Autumn..another stranger in a city of strangers..Ah yes..I have to put George M.Gould's CONCERNING LAFCADIO
HEARN....nicest copy ever on HomeBase...Conerning Susan...concerning love
lost...concerning the past that's passing...concerining the lengthening
shadows... 10 secs. to kickoff..DRn..
