Subject: m&r...wild, blue avant-garde...onward yonder..
the social whirl...at the Rachel Whitread opening..in the renovated
garage on west west 24St....the ART kids at the door almost don;t let us
in...we're not on the guest list and i'm wearing my sweater
inside-out...they have to make a quick decision on whether i'm homeless or
just eccentric..being with L..who looks like $$$...helps and so does some
quick mumbling...and anyway we were invited by Peter...who..etc...there are two large pieces..one of which is a mummifcation of
a lotta books....always an ambiguous site to a bookperson...I mention to
D'Offay (whom Peter is kind enuf to introduce me to) that artists take some
perverse pleasure in destroying books..remembering the Ruscha show at
Castelli 3 years ago...In a high perfectly pitched voice just short of
putting down but polite enought to cut butter..He sez Ruscha painted O on
the books..Shu' 'nuf honey chile...i'm in my place and when I ax him what
he collect..he sez primitive books..which I take to mean books with lotsa
00000 signs after the first digit..and way outta my league...Peter tells me
the next day that he's like a monk...l'art pure.... the $$$ green or gold...after the 2nd glass of redwine..some cheap cheese strips and
better nuts..never let free chow down...pathological shy me...goes right on
up to Ms Gund..and tells her how i enjoyed her little eulogy at the
Castelli memorial the other night..but I was thinking about one story she
tole....Seems Leo wouldn't sell her the Johns she wanted (many yrs before)
and that it had to go to Si Newhouse because he had a GREAT COLLECTION...&
moreover etc....Ms. Gund ended the talk saying she hoped Leo (in the
endless white endless gallery of white canvasses of Paradisio) would now
think SHE was a great collector...and i'm sure the 50 to 100 million $$$
collection she's leaving to M.O.M.A...is sign there of...what interested me about the Story...was from the seller's
point of view...we're of course talking minor leagues..like c ball...that
the seller is never selling the object at hand but is selling the next
book, piece of art...he's selling the one 20 years down the line that will
keep him in bizness, his kids in college and his amour in sushi...selling
and collecting are twin arts dancing to the music of the long, bite of
time..20 years is NADA...and shall we fill up THE GREAT LIBRARIES OF ALPHA
CENTAURI, my friends...e-mailed Bob one of my m&r's...his collab books with artists
is at the N.Y.Public Lib and coming to a site near you...he writes back
that I'm (two l"s) in wild blue avant-garde..onward yonder..O Tempora ...O
Mores...this grey hair is now short....they say art is Long...In N.Y...the
light changes and the Taxi driver guns the pedal..Drn...
