Bought some half decent books- 2 carver's-david wagoner's 1st
book-an inscribed Meyerowitz & Larry Fink- from a four story town house in
tri-beca, was no. 23 in line and was half an hour behind the first
wave----still books being the dross they are, not being the Bentley in the
garage nor the hideous 5 grand painting glued to the walls nor even the
modern furn.all 100's to 1000's of bucks..should be grateful for small
favors....the leavings of the rich...also bought a dozen socks 50c each,
wearing one now, and a a few sharp knives..for.....Last week's Sun Times Biz Sect. has full first page article (no i
don;t know the wwwwww where you can find it) on the growth of B&N & Leonard
R. it's CEO, since B&N is my best customer per moment, they're my love of
the moment, you pay the price you get the love or the disease you deserve,
ANYWAYS, it was in Thucydedes (can't even come close to spelling it) that
he must have learnt all about discounting....One interesting comment from our Pres. Lennie R. was that for the
1st time he couldn't see 5 years ahead in the book selling biz...Well
Lenny, let me tell you, the Trade Book is dead, done, overdone, stick a
bookplate in it.....The mass marketing that 3 channels 2 newspapers &
Cultural Hegemony has produced is breaking up....the centre will not
hold...a 1,000 voices a 1,000,000 voices a billion voices breaking up the
drib-drab of the cultural establishment...Last year in front of N.Y.U 5 o.p. guys were traffiking in reading
books to the eds and coeds..today one year later 1/2 of one is soldiering
on...Why be entertained when you can entertain yourself on the net...or to
get Real why play video games when you can play War games, see Serbia and
Littleton...For me this is not an issue of bad B&N good Independents (take Pat
Holt and shrill her down) a pox and prosperity on both their houses... At
least B&N had the intelligence to enter the OP market, while the
Independents ts had the intelligence to get lawyers to complain about not
entering it...9 out of 10 new book sellers don;t have the intelligence to
tie their own shoes let alone sell OP books, what do they do that;s so
noble, mass feed the customers the mass fed books that are mass produced by
the publishers and info industry...and this goes double for the LITERARY
SELLERS, mass fed by the Pultizer's, N.B.A., Faulkners, yuck em...My god what a lot of spleen for Mon. morn. and on only one cup of
jo..what will the Aft. bring, lite, love and the KULTURAL rev..from the
bunker..Drn
