10 to 10 the first spring day after dim sum....the first customer
lines up at the Strand, at 12st books (nee Chelsea Books) still with paper signs,
the clerk goes out to Starbucks before opening up...hello Harry . Nudel,
who doesn't even bother to go to the flea market...new mind, new hopes, new
tactics...Other signs of Spring, 3 booksellers sprout up opposite the Astor
Place Cube..nice clean ordinary stock...one of them tells he's going on to
the net...the next year in Jerualem routine...with cell phone and computer
sell from sidewalk stand to Tipperary...At Montclair there were 71 (count 'em) paying 4 a piece idiots. I was
IDIOT #33, I know because H...from AB...with whom I had coffee an internet
first date...was last in line, a virgin...These Montclair Ladies AAUW, had
a long computerized list of the Better Stuff...The Dealer or Dealer Lady
whose bright idea this was..took all the REALLY good books and overpriced
the rest..the usual routine, would have done the exact same thing
myself...A nice signed Robert Moses for $15..snapped up by some one else..In it's hey day...Montclair had 200 over people on line...the stink of
preference whittled down the line...I did buy a Destruction of Lower
Manhattan for $7..I deserved it..now on line as of 10 to 10...for 500...any
takers..Yrs ago when I sorted books for Greenwich Vil. Thrift..an inscribed
Einstein walked in..and walked out with me..as did an On the Road with
review slip tipped-in...it's all point of view..o rashomon me..The other big news at Montclair was Bill Boyer wasn't #1..or even in
the top 10...we're all slowing down..71 whites in a row...As I wake up from
dozing in the scar at 8:30..The Montclair Bus lets off...all
african-americans to clean the house, man and woman the shops etc..the more
things change it;s the same..the only two African-Americans at the sale
were the two Security Guards...One is being talked to buy a twitty
Dentist's Wife..how she made this money in the market and Harley
Davidson;s...he's Nodding his head..On Sat. I buy a nice collection of small press Black Poetry from Billy,
the evil prescence is still hibernating...where there's money to be made,
wade right in and damn the torpodoes, Spring and Spring 'Em to U all...Dr
