1/2 time at basketball game...hard raindrove away flea
marketeers...On the Ethical Front just Potmanteaued my book with G's D.J...to make a
respectable copy of If He Hollers...& as the word turns T..wants me to
Sell some Ray Gun Johnson...My Tenn. guy..is in & out..so when I go over to BUY some more..he's
out...Way Out...wait for a better day..and realize I'm prob. more
interested in the story than the books...but not the $$$$$...Almost spring mixing memory $ a chaser....
I must have seen Arthur 25 years ago along Flatbush Ave..where he had a
store..but I wasn't to into it...Later he moved to Cortelyou Rd...about a
mile from Blyn College..Then as now very mixed nabe..with large, now tres cher, old Victorian
Homes, & remnants of the ghetto, a Transition Neighborhood, polite for
White Fleet...Arthur loved Mags..They were hung in the window on clips strung along
ropes..he prob. got these from the Garbage Collectors..He was about 70 when
I knew him..spike white haired, bony thin, and with a hesistation stutter
in his voice, but energetic and some..Hr must have been on, i realize now, some form of SSI disability...He
slept in the back...and if you bought something steadily..you could go back
there..hard cot with invariably unmade Bed..just really a sheet with two
drab grey brown blankies..It took an act of faith to go back there..since the books were nothing
to speak of..local trash cull..and whatever haphazardly wandered in...but I
was young...and sometimes I'd even get to the books under the bed..or to
the books...over the bed which you reached with a ladder...but surely were
never anybody than any other...Arthur lead a rather exotic sex life...or so he told me...in got
known in the nabe..that he like to eat off the plate of life...and as this
was a rather exotic delicacy in this Nabe..rather like snails...he got all
he could..or so He sd or imagined..He also talked often of the neighbborhood dusky girls..all of 15 or
15,,,that the mothers would bring in..he being eligible and all..and
having an income and all a good catch...we all hover between fantasy and
desire...but I can imagine Arthur taking one of his Local Lovelies..out for
an Ice-Cream Sunday as he closed down the Gates on a Fine Spring Sat.A Few of the Books I bought from Arthur I sold to Carter Burden..who
Donated them in the long End to the Morgan Library, as the World Turns it
Turns...I remember walking in on Arthur one Morning when he was eating 8
pork chops..in between he had a minitaure set of Bar Bells that he would
excercis with..See How strong I am..I often thought I;d end up like Arthur..but my luck is of a different
sort..You can lose anything in Bklyn...even the past...DR N.
