wrap: gifts in old maps with sepia-colored ribbons. or ribands, as they used to so pleasingly say.

read: tackle something big this summer, e.g. the chef d'oeuvre of anthony powell, a novel in twelve parts called dance to the music of time. we have not seen the bbc production, but i doubt it can be fit to tie the shoes of powell's dense, richly absorbing novel, with its multiplicitously persuasive characters and its sensual, richly cerebral dissection of all the 20th century's pet concerns. here is a novel to provide bone-deep and abiding pleasure; fans of the nineteen-forties will especially rejoice. on the other hand, if you feel like cheap thrills, able chronicler of disaster jon krakauer has turned his pen to the truly eye-popping history of the mormon church in the forthcoming under the banner of heaven. yipes. the subjects here have fallen from an even greater height than they did in krakauer's first blockbuster (the excellent into thin air.)

drink: alsatian gewurztraminer on ice, when it gets hot. very thinly sliced sopresata and figs on the side, while you're at it.
